The Last Second, by Catherine Coulter and J.T. Ellison, is the sixth book in the A Brit in the FBI series. Each one seems to be more action-packed than the last. This one involves an astronaut, Dr. Nevaeh Patel, whose tether breaks loose during a spacewalk. Afterwards, she is diagnosed with PTSD, and her sanity is questioned. When NASA’s psychiatrist grounds her, she is determined not only to return to space, but also to get revenge.
FBI special agents and members of the bureau’s Covert Eyes Team,Michaela (Mike) Caine andNicholas Drummond are still in England, with plans to go to Rome. Mike is recovering from a hairline fracture of her ankle when they find themselves drawn into near disaster.
There is a search for the Heaven Stone, also known as the Holy Grail which Nevaeh believes will make her immortal. She will stop at nothing to get her hands on that stone. Mike and Nicholas are called upon to rescue the crew of a yacht that has been attacked, and immediately become involved in literally saving the world from Nevaeh’s insane evil plans.
The Last Second is a fast-paced thriller with a little comedy and just a hint of romance thrown in. I couldn’t put it down.3
What Makes This Reviewer Grumpy?
- Using “loaning” in place of “lending”;
- Using “further” in place of “farther” – they are not interchangeable;
- A lot of split infinitives;
- Using “bring” in place of “take”;
- Misplacement of the word “only” within sentences;
- Consistently beginning sentences with the conjunctions “and” and “but”.l
